Geneology Chart

Mockup of Geneology Chart

What can you learn from the Genealogy of the Patriarchs?

You can learn endless things while studying this chart. It will bring up things, or bring out things, you have never thought about before. It can put the entire Old Testament in perspective for you, which will also enlighten your understanding of the New Testament and the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ.

This table shows you in one view, which of the Patriarchs were contemporary with each other and consequently how easy it was to hand down, from Adam to Isaac (a period of 2,158 years), the particulars of the creation and the fall of man, through 81 different channels. Each of these channels alone, can lead to new and deep insights, which can help connect your knowledge of things that happened in the Bible, and give you a very helpful context for them. As I say, there is no end to the insights you might gain, by comparing one part of the chart with another part of the chart and keep going from part to part.

Insights from the Genealogy of Patriarchs Chart

When Adam died at the age of 930, Methuselah was already 243 years old. Methuselah lived to be 969 years old.

Methuselah died the same year God sent the worldwide flood in the days of Noah, who built the ark to survive. Interestingly, the name “Methuselah” actually means “The Year Of The Flood”. God allowed Methuselah to die in peace before the flood came. There were about 1,500 years of history from the creation of Adam and Eve till the great flood.

Noah’s father…Lamech…had died five years earlier before the 40 day flood started.

Enoch was translated (raptured) alive from earth to heaven 57 years after Adam died.

Adam’s son Seth lived for more than 55 years after Enoch was translated to heaven, once again illustrating how much the lives of these Patriarchs overlapped, because of how long they lived back then. This allowed so many of them to know each other, interact with each other, and exchange knowledge with each other.

Noah was born only 14 years after Adam’s son Seth died. Think about that!

There are only 352 years between the worldwide flood in Noah’s life and the birth of Abraham.

Noah (who went through the flood on his ark) died only two years before Abraham was born.

Abraham’s father Terah, was alive during the last 128 years of Noah’s life.

Abraham was already 150 years old, when Noah’s son Shem died (and Shem had been on the ark with Noah).

Isaac (Abraham and Sarah's beloved son) was already 50 years old when Noah’s son Shem died. So, again the obvious insight here is how Shem and Isaac could and probably did know each other well, which means Shem could have easily explained what he experienced on the ark with Noah, but also all the things he learned from Noah, about Noah’s relationship with the Patriarchs who lived and died before the flood. This would be precious information about the first 1,500 years of history, from Adam to Noah and the flood.

Noah’s son Shem (who had been on the Ark), died only ten years before Esau and Jacob were born to Isaac and Rebekah.

Isaac’s twin sons, Esau and Jacob, were already 15 years old when their Grandfather Abraham died. How much pre-flood biblical history could they have learned from their grandfather Abraham, who knew Noah’s son Shem?

All of these Biblical facts are so fascinating for anyone who loves the Word of God and believes in the history recorded in the Bible. But I have not even touched the wealth of Biblical insights you might gain, if you study this chart from every angle possible.

A Personal Note:

Clara Gobble, my godly grandmother was a student of the Word (or a work horse of the Word), who developed this chart for her own pleasure and edification over a more than 30 year period. As I was growing up, I would see her, with all of her study tools spread out over her large dining room table, digging and digging and digging into the Word of God, to figure these times and relationships out. She would continue her studies until my grandfather got home from work. Then she would place a huge table cover over the entire table covering and protecting her notes, so she could serve my grandfather and/or others a family meal.

Once she had all of this information organized and listed in the proper way, she hand wrote what you see in this chart on the back of a very large old calendar, from my grandfather’s office. When she died and we were going throughout her home to see what we should do with the things she left behind, I pulled the table covering off that dinner table and found this hand written genealogy chart. I was so touched, as I began to study it for the first time myself. She had never shown me what she had been studying for all of those years.

I decided then, that I wanted to have this printed up in very nice and usable form, as a testimony to her love for Christ and His Word, and as a way to let others enjoy it and learn from it.

You can now order your own copy or copies of this Genealogy of the Patriarchs. If you do, I pray it will bring you as much spiritual pleasure and edification, as it has to me.
